Documentary Features Original Group Members and History
A fresh film production explores the personal lives and professional trajectories of Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett, Maizie Williams, and Bobby Farrell. Directed by Oliver Schwehm, the documentary examines the band’s global success alongside the challenges they faced behind the scenes.
Boney M. documentaries at a glance
This new film joins a small list of Boney M. documentaries. The best known is On Stage & On the Road (also released as The Videos & On The Road), a German TV special made for the 1981 album Boonoonoonoos. It follows the group to Jamaica for an open-air charity concert for Jamaican orphans and runs about 97 minutes. In 2011 came Boney M. aus Lämmerspiel, directed by Eddy Jacobs and Christian A. Lang. The newest production is different because it puts the four original members — Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett, Maizie Williams and Bobby Farrell — at the centre of the story.
Who really sang on Boney M. records?
Every Boney M. documentary returns to the same question. On the records, the female vocals came mainly from Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett. The deep male voice was producer Frank Farian himself; Bobby Farrell was the group’s dancer and frontman on stage. That studio-versus-stage story is why the band is still discussed today, and also why its songs still fill dance floors.
